Haha yeah that’s how I felt reading yours. Crazy times. A lot of people have been saying similar things.
Why thank you for the salutations. I just read your review, and you can clearly read my mind. I nodded the whole way through, very enthusiastically.
(The expansion and detail of a long review are extremely valuable too.)
I just thought I’d re-post this because I just posted a mile long review and you said it all more eloquently in the space of a few sentences. I salute you.
I saw Prometheus.
I wholeheartedly salute the FX people and spit upon the writers.

It was meant to be all deep-humanity-faith-audacity-courage-danger-re-evaluate-your-lifeness, but all I learned was that YOU DON’T TAKE YOUR HELMET OFF ON A STRANGE PLANET LITTERED WITH DEAD BODIES. Neither do you touch alien goo.
I have known this since one of the first Star Trek episodes ever.
Don’t even talk to me about character development.
Damn pretty though.

Ridley Scott was the creator of the original “Alien” film and so when I found out he would be directing a prequel, naturally, I was absurdly excited to the point I would have “Fan-girl” moments every time I saw/hear the tiniest mention of this up and coming block buster. However now that I have watched the movie I regret going into the film with any prior knowledge of the Alien films and of Ridley Scott’s previous work. I feel that both I and the media over hyped it to the point I went into the cinema with the expectations of a cinematic masterpiece and came out of the cinema sorely disappointed. I went in expecting an Alien movie and hopefully some explanation or further knowledge than I went in with and came out realising how silly I was to expect this, the film seemed to try please everyone rather than its target audience and already established fan base meaning there was very little character development, a lot of romance and a lot of explosions (OK so I admit I expected and took pleasure in the explosions but they were a bit over the top).
There was no real plot and I felt the whole point of the film was just to kill of the majority characters so we could get to a point where the actual story could be explored in future movies. I felt that every stupid action a character took was merely to thrust the story in a certain direction meaning the ending gave me little, if any, resolve and I was left feeling like I had just been cheated out of £7 because I would have to pay the same when another film came out to gain anything of value from this film.
I can admit that the direction and the presentation of the film was wonderful and the opening sequence of the movie was simply breath taking in its beauty. I also felt all of the emotions I think I was meant to but these did not come from the story they came from the mise-en-scene of the movie which over all was stunningly beautiful. The few emotions I felt surrounding the story were mainly that of sorrow. I felt sad for the destructive nature of mankind and sad for the fact we probably inherited this destructive nature from out “creators” who intended to destroy us. Overall I felt it was a rather cynical representation mankind’s view of life.
I did consistently enjoy Fassbender’s quirky representation of “David” he was a mixture of a child’s innocence, in that he enjoyed movies and was easily excited by praise and new discoveries, and his misguided plots which were for self service in the long run. However, I did not go to see Prometheus because I wanted to be presented with a quirky AI and so it added little to my enjoyment of this movie.
There was about 10 minutes in the middle of the movie that held the majority of the gore and violence and, while it made me a little sick, I enjoyed it thoroughly and it was the closest to the other alien films the movie go. Had I just seen this part of the film I feel my review would have been drastically different.
Often when I leave the cinema I can talk for hours about the impressiveness of shots, the characters I liked best and the scenes that affected me most, yet with Prometheus I felt that I had nothing to say other than a few mediocre comments on the “prettiness” at the start of the film and the brilliance of the effects throughout the film and anything concerning plot or characters was negative and almost non-existent.
I hate that my review of this film seems so negative because I did enjoy myself and really isn’t that what we watch movies for? I am, however, disappointed to say that if I were asked to sum up my feelings on Prometheus in a few sentences it would be a mediocre “It was a good film”.
